Noah French

Hi! My name is Noah, and I am a fifth-year clinical psychology PhD student at UVA. I am excited to be joining Cville Family Therapy for a one-year rotation!

My goal as a therapist is first and foremost to create a warm and accepting space where you can feel safe to explore whatever is on your mind, without judgement. From there, I will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan to support your specific goals in therapy. I tend to draw from “evidence-based treatments” in my work, meaning I use approaches that research tells us are likely to help. Specifically, I use a lot of techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI).

I enjoy working with families, couples, and individuals of all ages and with all types of mental health concerns, though I have the most experience working with adults experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and stressful life circumstances. I am especially passionate about working with LGBTQ+ clients to explore themes of identity development, coping with stigma and oppression, and cultivating Queer joy. As a Queer person myself, I know this is a stressful time given the current political landscape and rollback of rights for trans people. I am excited to help clients explore how to not just survive but thrive during this time.

Before my time at Cville Family Therapy, I was a student therapist in the Mary D. Ainsworth Psychological Clinic and UVA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Last year, I worked as a behavioral health consultant in the Family Medicine Clinic at UVA Health.

When I am not with clients, I spend good deal of time doing research. My research looks at how LGBTQ+ young adults are impacted by and manage their emotions around the stressful experiences in their day-to-day lives, with the goal of eventually improving our mental health treatments to better support Queer people. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, playing volleyball, enjoying nature, and reading.

Noah is supervised by Dr. Alex Werntz, licensed clinical psychologist.
